Despite the fact that India is best known for its classic Bollywood remixes and the new hip-hop genre, the indie genre has made its way into the country. This is because the indie genre’s popularity grew significantly in Western culture, and its fan base in India grew a lot as well. 

Indie applies to artists and bands who produce and distribute their work through small record labels rather than large record labels that provide massive exposure through marketing and other means. Indie artists rely primarily on themselves and their low-profile record labels, the majority of which they own.

Prateek Kuhad is a well-known singer-songwriter who is known for his mesmerizing angelic voice. While Prateek Kuhad has been a popular name in India for years, 2019 has been his most successful year globally. He was not only Featured to former US President Barack Obama’s “favorite music list of 2019,” but he also became the most streamed artist on Spotify India that year.

Shirley Setia

Shirley, a New Zealand girl of Indian ancestry, has over a million Facebook fans. She performs covers of popular Hindi film songs, giving them her own special spin. She draws inspiration from Asha Bhonsle and Kay Kay, and she recently participated in the YouTube Fan Fest.

The F16s

The Chennai F16s have performed at all of the country’s biggest festivals, including the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, all editions of the NH7 Weekender, India Bike Week, GoMAD, and ZimaFest, among others. They believe that the most mundane aspects of life produce the most best revelations.

The Local Train

This Delhi-based rock band became a YouTube sensation, with over a million views on their videos. Sennheiser ranked them as India’s №1 rock band in 2015. They don’t stick to a single genre, because as Indians, they claim that Hindi is the best way to express themselves. Black Letters

Black Letters, a Bengaluru-based rock band, is one of the most popular in India’s southern states. They started out as a metal band in 2007, but by 2010, they had found their sound and had turned into a rock band.

Taba Chake

Taba Chake, a singer-songwriter from Arunachal Pradesh’s Nyishi tribe, writes songs influenced by tribal mythology. He’s known for his distinctive vocals, songwriting, and stage presence. ‘Bombay Dreams,’ his most recent album, was released (2019).

Parvaaz

If you’re opening for alt-J, you better have some killer tunes. Parvaaz was founded in 2010. Their music is essentially Rock with Indian influences. The band’s vocals are mostly Urdu, Hindi, and a little Kashmiri. Listening to them will change your perception of what is catchy.

Mali

Mali is a professional name for Maalavika Manoj, an Indian musician and songwriter based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She was a member of the underground band Bass-in-Bridge, and after the band disbanded in 2011, she went solo. Absolute, her most recent album, and singles like play are soulful and would be something you’d listen to over and over. Dreaming, sooner or later, and other gems can be found on her album ‘Rush.’ Her voice can be heard in a few Tamil feature films, and she has English-language songs on her YouTube channel that are inspired by events in her everyday life.

Maati Baani

Maati Baani is made up of Nirali Kartik and Kartik Shah. Their melodies are influenced by Hindustani classical music, but they often collaborate with artists from other countries, which gives their music a unique flavor.

Kanchan Daniel & The Beards

Kanchan Daniel and Mukesh Lobo, a keyboardist, founded this blues rock band in Mumbai in 2012. Their music is stunning, and the lyrics are heartfelt.
