Why having a roommate is the best thing in college/student life?

If not everyone then at least a few students are perturbed at the thought of sharing a student accommodation with a complete stranger/roommate. Sometimes you hate that they ate all your secret food stash, but you like that you have someone to come back to after boring classes, you hate them, you love them. FlatMates are a rite of passage in the quest of leaving your family home and stepping into different world adulthood.

1. More Friends = Bigger Social Network

roommate

Staying with more number of people(such as living with your friends or a stranger as a FlatMate) is always a good idea when you move out of your home city. This way you will get new friends instantly and it will be easier settling down, and if they all are from outside as well then you will have a great time figuring out and discovering the new city together. Plus your social network broadens marginally. Their friends will become your friends, yours will become theirs. If you think this only lasts until university life then think again. You will make friends for life and friends all around the world. Last time we checked that’s a smashing thing! Who knows you might both be from the same university as well, now it couldn’t get better than this.

2. Get Help With Coursework with your FlatMate

roommate

Now you might not both have the same major or both be studying the same subjects, but nonetheless, it does not mean that you can not help each other out. If you are writing an essay or working on a paper your roommate can always help you with proofreading it for you or help you with titles or anything else that you require assistance with. Also sometimes two minds are better than one. Right?

3. Workout Buddy

roommate

Staying fit is a necessity and you need to have a healthy body to have a healthy mind. The active student lifestyle is time-consuming and it is difficult to make time for the gym as well. But what if you have a FlatMate who is all about lunges and squats, well then it is great news as then you will have a readymade gym companion. Working out with a partner everyone knows is better, as you have one person who will drag you and motivate you to lead a healthier lifestyle.

4. Almost all day Company

roommate

Want to try out the new neighbourhood cafe or thinking of going on retail therapy? Well, you’ve got your partner in crime to accompany you! With your roomie around, you don’t have to do things alone and sulk in silence.

5. Backup Wardrobe

rooms

Every hostler/PG person/FlatMate knows the struggle of doing the dirty laundry and most of us run out of clean clothes when you have to go on a date or have plans to go clubbing with your friends. This is when having a roomie comes as a blessing in disguise, (size matters) you both share each other’s wardrobe and often forget to return one another’s clothes.

6. Sharing is Caring

roommate

Having an Awful day? Awesome day? You’ll always have someone with whom you can share. If a professor gave you a nice earful or you need to share daily life titbits, you have someone with a fresh perspective which you can trust in order to keep your emotions in check.

P.S. There is no greater joy than sitting your roomie down after you’ve been on a date and dissecting every last minor detail.

7. Vent and Rant!

roommate

Had a tiff with your family over the phone? Going through a breakup? It’s great to have a FlatMate in such tough times when you can vent and rant about someone who by all intentions and purposes is a completely objective third party observer with completely no personal interest in the matter.

8. Key-Buddy!

roommate

Chances are, you’ll lock yourself out. Don’t be embarrassed, as it happens to everyone. Instead of having the house key hidden under a “secret rock” or below the foot mat, you have your roommate. Let’s just hope he didn’t choose that moment to go out to wander somewhere roommate.

9.Save! Save! Save!

housemate

Staying together with other people helps you cut down on costs marginally each month. If you can come to an agreement then you will find that you can share on food, supplies for the house and so much more. You can arrange to buy groceries for the house in turns. This way you will always have food and supplies and if you are ever unable to pick something up your flatmate can always do that for you. This way everything will be more affordable and you will have so much more to spend on yourself.

Remember! Good friends do not always make good roommates. Good roommates do not always make good friends.
